Caliphs, Sultans, Presidents: Rulers between Religion and Realpolitik throughout Islamic History

On July 21-22, 2016,  an international workshop took place as project of the Graduate School of the Cluster of Excellece "Religion and Politics". It was organized by Stephan Tölke from the Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies together with Nadeem Khan.

The workshop aimed at providing a cross section through Islamic history on the topic of "Rulers between Religion and Realpolitik". Therefore, it covered in three distinct panels the periods of the early caliphates, the shadow caliphate, and modernity. Furthermore, as part of the workshop's program, a public keeynote was held by Jonathan Berkey entitled "Commanded to Speak by God and His Prophet. Religious Authority in Medieval Islam".
