The Clusters of Excellence of the University of Münster

The two Clusters of Excellence "Mathematics Münster: Dynamics - Geometry - Structure" and "Religion and Politics" bring together researchers from the humanities and natural sciences. The "Cells in Motion" Cluster of Excellence is to receive bridge financing until October 2019 in order to complete ongoing research projects. Aside from these, the University of Münster supports cutting-edge research in a number of internationally renowned fields, such as evolutionary science, chemistry and physics.

Cluster of Excellence "Mathematics Münster. Dynamics - Geometry - Structure"

The Cluster of Excellence "Mathematics Münster. Dynamics - Geometry - Structure" will tackle fundamentally important mathematical problems, viewing mathematics as an organic whole with countless interactions. The research is unified by three major approaches: focusing on the underlying structure of a given problem, taking the geometric viewpoint and studying the relevant dynamics of group or semigroup actions.

Spokespersons: Prof. Dr. Christopher Deninger und Prof. Dr. Mario Ohlberger; both Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science
Participating Institutes: Institute for Analysis and Numerics, Institute for Mathematical Stochastics, Institute for Mathematical Logic and Foundations of Mathematics, Mathematical Institute

Cluster of Excellence "Religion and Politics"

Some 200 humanities scholars in 20 disciplines are currently exploring the relationship between religion and politics throughout history and across cultures. The spectrum ranges from the ancient world of mythical gods, to Judaism, Christianity and Islam in the Middle Ages and early modernity, to the present situation in Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa.

Speaker: Prof. Nils Jansen, Faculty of Law
Participating disciplines: History, Law, Political Studies, Sociology of Religion, Religious Studies, Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox and Islamic Theology, Classical and Modern Philology and Philosophy, Art History, Arabic Studies, Ethnology, Ancient Middle Eastern Studies, Archaeology, Egyptology, Jewish Studies, Byzantine Studies, Musicology and Book Studies of the University of Münster

Cluster of Excellence "Cells in Motion"

More than 90 research groups are using cutting-edge imaging technology to investigate the dynamic cellular behaviour in organisms. The ambitious programmes in this Cluster of Excellence are helping to advance basic biomedical research, its clinical application in diagnostics and therapy, and the interaction between theory and practice.

Coordination team: Prof. PhD Lydia Sorokin (speaker), Prof. Dr. Volker Gerke and Prof. Dr. Michael Schäfers; all from the Faculty of Medicine
Participating faculties and non-university facilities: Faculties of Medicine, Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Physics of the University of Münster; Max Planck Institute of Molecular Biomedicine
