ComeSport meeting in Leipzig

In the BMBF project ComeSport, the Education and Culture in Sport and Education and Teaching in Sport departments are developing training courses for teachers on the subject of social media and body image in physical education. A meeting with other project partners has now taken place at Leipzig University. The first training sessions have already been tested.

CeBiS Research Day 2024

At this year's Research Day of the Centre for Educational Research in Sport on 11.09.24, Brigitta Höger (Pädagogische Hochschule Oberösterreich) presented her exciting research on the perspectives of young people on sport-related social media offerings. In addition, Marion Golenia and Kathrin Aschebrock (AB Bildung und Unterricht im Sport) from the project Quality at the all day education presented current results on participation opportunities in primary schools, comparing the children's perspective with that of adults (teachers and OGS staff).

8th Workshop on Systematic Observation in Educational Research

From 17-18 September, the international ‘Workshop on Systematic Observation in Educational Research’, organised by Dr Kathrin Kohake, took place for the 8th time at the University of Münster. At the annual network meeting of European users of the Classroom Assessment Scoring System, current study results from various educational contexts were presented and discussed. The programme was framed by two renowned keynote speeches: Dr Bridget Hamre from the USA and Prof Dr Charalambos Charalambous from Cyprus. The event was sponsored by the DFG, the University of Münster's Internationalisation Fund and the Unfallkasse.

Writing workshop for PhD students at the IfS

PhD students at the Institute of Sport Science once again had the opportunity to take part in a two-day writing workshop to work on their dissertations in an undisturbed atmosphere. A total of 10 doctoral students from various fields of work went to the Willi-Michels-Bildungsstätte in Hattingen from August 5-6, accompanied by two postdocs. The feedback was very positive - the doctoral students particularly appreciated the structured writing times and the interdisciplinary exchange. The next writing workshop is planned for spring 2025.

“Quality in all-day education” successfully completed

The “Quality in all-day education” (QIG) project, which was conducted by the department of Physical Education and Teaching Reseach in collaboration with the Reinhard Mohn Foundation (RMS) has now been successfully completed. Under the direction of Dr. Marion Golenia and Kathrin Aschebrock, a modular online questionnaire instrument was developed and tested. The tool helps all-day schools to optimize the quality of their work in the areas of learning time, participation and room design.

Poster session "School sport and democracy"

As part of Prof. Nils Neuber's project seminar "School sport and democracy", students carried out practical research projects in schools and sport clubs. Over the course of several weeks, they worked on topics such as participation in performance assessment, children's rights in school sport, federalism in the education system and democratic education throughout the day. They have now presented their results in a poster session and discussed them with external guests.

Successful closing event of the Special Olympic project seminar

The Special Olympic NRW project seminar was successfully concluded with a poster session on 20.06.24 with guests from the Special Olympic team. The students investigated self-selected research questions during the NRW state games and mainly interviewed or observed people involved in the state games. They presented their research results on scientific posters and presented them during the event. Afterwards, students discussed their personal impressions and experiences with the guests in a plenary session.

Limits and dissolving boundaries in sports education

The 37th annual conference of the sports education section of the German Association for Sports Science took place at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Essen under the title “Limits and dissolving boundaries in Sports Education”. A total of four days were spent discussing issues of social disadvantage, non-professional physical education, the digitalization of school sport and much more. The Institute was comprehensively represented with the departments of education and culture in sport, physical education and teaching research and sport psychology.

Knowledge transfer in sports education

In the summer of 2022, the 35th annual conference of the Sport Pedagogy Section of the German Association for Sport Science took place at the Institute of Sport Science in Münster. The event addressed the question of the extent to which knowledge transfer is a central topic in sports education. Based on selected conference contributions, an anthology on this topic has now been published in the “Education and Sport” series by the Center for Educational Research in Sport (CeBiS). In a total of 17 contributions, the authors present the basics, topics and formats of sports education knowledge transfer.

Movement as a principle of school development

At the invitation of the head of the school department, Prof. Dr. Nils Neuber gave a lecture on the topic of “Learning needs movement - movement as a principle of school development” at the extended conference of the Münster district government. Based on learning theory, the heads of school administration discussed the importance of a moving school culture and the promotion of self-control skills through movement.

Education needs movement

For the seventh time, the City Sports Association and the School Department of the City of Dortmund organized a symposium on the topic of 'education needs movement'. Around 280 professionals discussed the communal interaction in the educational triangle of daycare centers, schools and sports clubs in numerous workshops. Prof. Dr. Nils Neuber gave the keynote speech on the topic of “Anchoring the joy of movement and sport at an early age”. Nils Kaufmann led a workshop on promoting boys in sport.

Interview on health and physical activity in nursing care

On the occasion of International Nurses' Day on May 12, the university newspaper wissen|leben (No. 3, May 8, 2024) covered the topic of nursing from various specialized disciplines. Among other things, an interview on health and physical activity in nursing was conducted with Dr. Stefanie Dahl. You can find the interview here.

Project meeting of the ComeNet "Body images and social media in school sport"

As part of the BMBF joint project ComeSport, the members of ComeNet 5 met at Paderborn University from 29 to 30 April 2024 to discuss the topic of "Body images and social media in school sport". The participants from the universities of Leipzig, Münster and Paderborn are jointly developing training courses for PE teachers on the ComeNet topic. At this project meeting, initial ideas for the individual training modules at the locations were presented and discussed.
The Institute of Sport Science was represented at this meeting by staff from the Education and Culture in Sport and Education and Teaching in Sport departments.

Lecture at the symposium “Violence is more than you think” by Dr. Kathrin Kohake

To mark the day of non-violent education, the German Sports Youth, together with the German Child Protection Association, hosted the symposium “Violence is more than you think - recognizing and preventing psychological violence in sport” on April 30. After a presentation on the prevalence of psychological violence in sport by Prof. Dr. Bettina Rulofs, Dr. Kathrin Kohake presented her research project on the development of rules of conduct as a core component of a prevention concept in the German Gymnastics Federation and the Hessen Gymnastics Association. The online event was well attended with over 110 participants.

Quality in day-care centers and all-day schooling

At the invitation of the German Sports Youth (dsj) and the DFL Foundation, a two-day symposium on the quality of physical activity, play and sports programs in daycare centers and all-day schools took place in Mannheim. Around 140 participants discussed the content and standards for high-quality physical activity and sports programs for children. Prof. Dr. Nils Neuber gave a presentation on the quality framework for all-day schooling and participation in all-day schooling.

2nd symposium “Children's and youth sports research in NRW - pilot projects from the research network”

On April 22, 2024, a symposium was held at the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia to present the results of completed pilot projects from the NRW Children's and Youth Sports Research Network, which were funded by the State Chancellery of NRW. The five presentations covered the topics of inclusion, all-day  and the monitoring of children's and youth sports. One of these pilot projects (SpoPsy4Health) was carried out by employees of the Institute of Sports Science in cooperation with Münster University Hospital. Female sports scientists managing university

Three female employees from the Institute of Sports Science have successfully completed the fourth cohort of the University of Münster's further qualification program "Women managing universities". The Prorector for Academic Career Development and Diversity, Prof. Dr. Maike Tietjens, awarded the certificates to the graduates at a ceremony on April 24, 2024. Dr. Ellen Bentlage ( Department of Human Movement Sciences), Kathrin Aschebrock and Dr. Stefanie Dahl (both Department of Physical Education and Teaching Research) received a scholarship from the University of Münster for the program.

Foundation of a network on democracy and sport

Around 15 sports scientists met at the Department of Sport and Exercise Science at the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg to establish a Democracy and Sport Network. For two days, the participants discussed previous work in this field and developed perspectives for future activities in research, teaching and transfer. The Institute of Sport Science was represented by Nils Kaufmann and Prof. Dr. Nils Neuber at the kick-off conference.

Successful disputation by Franziska Duensing-Knop

Franziska Duensing-Knop wrote her dissertation on "Inclusion in physical education teacher training - an explorative study of university didactic concepts to promote an inclusive attitude" as part of the teacher training quality campaign. She has now successfully defended her doctoral thesis. The doctoral committee included Prof. Nils Neuber, Prof. Michael Pfitzner (University of Duisburg-Essen) and Junior Prof. Helga Leineweber. We would like to congratulate Dr. Duensing-Knop on her successful doctorate!

Organizing all-day education in a multi-professional way

Following an invitation of the Federal Ministry of Education (BMBF) and the Federal Youth Ministry (BMFSFJ), a threeday conference on all-day education took place in Berlin. Experts from politics, administration, science and the practice discussed the challenges of multi-professional collaboration in all-day schools. Prof. Bernhard Kalicki (DJI), Prof. Miriam Kehne (University of Paderborn), Prof. Jessica Süßenbach (University of Lüneburg) and Prof. Nils Neuber (University of Münster) presented perspectives on the development of all-day schools on behalf of sport. Promoting development in school sport - for everyone!

In March, the fourth symposium on "Promoting development in school sport - for everyone!?" was held at the Institute of Sports Science. In three lectures and a total of 12 workshops, around 240 participants discussed questions of mental, social and emotional support in physical education. The conference was organized by the Department of Physical Education and Teaching Research (Prof. Neuber) and the Developmental Diagnostics and Support working group (Prof. Tietjens). Partners included the NRW State Chancellery, the NRW Statutory accident insurance institution, the Münster District Government and the Willlibald Gebhardt Institute.

Children's and youth sport at the physical activity summit

At the invitation of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Ministry of Health, the 2nd Federal Physical Activity Summit took place in Berlin. After a year of intensive, interdisciplinary work, five working groups had submitted their proposals for a sports development plan. Unfortunately, the federal government, the federal states and organized sport were unable to agree on a mutual final declaration. Nevertheless, the recommendations of the expert groups are helpful for the development of sport in general and children's and youth sport in particular. The working group 4 "Anchoring the joy of exercise and sport at an early age" was led by Prof. Miriam Kehne (Paderborn) and Prof. Nils Neuber (University of Münster).

The challenges of children's track and field

The German Track and Field Association (DLV) held its third Future Congress in cooperation with the Cologne Sports University. Under the title " Track and Field - Opportunities & Challenges", experts discussed the future of children's and youth track and field. Prof. Dr. Nils Neuber opened the conference with a lecture on the topic "Between school, all-day sports and clubs - perspectives for children's and youth sports".

Project seminar on body experience

As part of the "Subject Didactics" module in the M. Ed. program, a group of students spent a week working on the section "Perceiving the body, developing movement skills". They experimented with topics such as tension, posture, breathing, body center of gravity and balance and developed possible approaches for physical education in schools. The event took place at the KSB Emsland education center in Sögel. Karsten Hoppe, Dr. Kathrin Kohake and Prof. Nils Neuber led the seminar.

Presentation of the results of the Move For Health project

Representative data on children's and youth sport in Germany was collected as part of the German Sports Youth's Move For Health research project. The results were presented at a hearing of experts organized by the dsj in Berlin and published in a brochure. Researchers from the University of Münster were involved in the study. PD Dr. Dennis Dreiskämper and Dr. Lena Henning (Department of Sports Psychology) presented representative findings on the psychosocial health of children and adolescents. Prof. Dr. Nils Neuber (Department of Education and Teaching in Sport) and Prof. Dr. Miriam Kehne (University of Paderborn) presented results from the in-depth study "Sport offers in all-day sports".

Establishing the joy of exercise and sport at an early age

As part of the conference of the 16 state sports youth associations, Prof. Dr. Nils Neuber gave a presentation on "Establishing the joy of exercise and sport at an early age - perspectives for children's and youth sport". In his presentation, he reported on the recommendations of the Federal Ministry of the Interior's Working Group 4 on the Sport Development Plan. Together with Prof. Dr. Miriam Kehne (Paderborn), Prof. Neuber chaired the working group 4. The results of the consultations will be presented on March 12 at the Federal Government's 2nd Physical Activity Summit in Berlin.

Lecture on all-day sport at the annual conference of sport youth NRW

The legal entitlement to all-day schooling from 2026 brings fundamental challenges for organized sport, but also offers opportunities and possibilities for the development of children's and youth sport. The annual conference of the sport youth NRW in January 2024 was precisely dedicated to these challenges and opportunities. For the Research Association for Child and Youth Sport NRW, Prof. Dr. Miriam Kehne (University of Paderborn) and Prof. Dr. Nils Neuber (University of Münster) provided scientific input on the topic of "Exercise, play and sport in all-day schools".
