At some point, every researcher faces the question of how to share their work with a wider audience. This workshop invites participants to explore publication options and strategies early on. While the main emphasis will be on turning a dissertation into a publication, we will also consider other formats of scholarly output. Together, we will tackle key questions such as:
- What publication formats are available (e.g., monograph, journal article, edited volume)?
- What are the pros and cons of different publishers (university presses vs. commercial publishers)?
- What do publishers expect—and how do I find the right fit?
- How do I adapt my dissertation for publication (language, length, audience)? What makes for a compelling book proposal?
- Why publish beyond my dissertation? And does my dissertation really need to appear with a prestigious press? (role of publications in academic and non-academic career paths; weighing different publishing strategies)
- How can I meet open-access requirements?
- What funding options are available?
Alongside practical input and first-hand insights, the workshop offers space for individual questions and peer-to-peer exchange. The aim is to equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to make informed choices about their publishing strategy—and to define concrete next steps for their own projects.
