Besides an improved version of the IceCube optical sensor,  several new sensor designs are being developed for IceCube-Gen2 which promise a significant improvement in sensitivity. One such novel design is the mDOM (multi-PMT-Digital-Optical-Module). Instead of a single, large 10 inch photomultiplier, it consists of 24 three-inch photomultipliers. Besides an increased photon-sensitive area, the large number of small photomultipliers provides information on the arrival direction of the photons and allows to suppress background using local coincidences.

Our group has a leading role in the hardware development for this sensor. Furthermore, we are working on simulations for a detector equipped with mDOMs for which we develop selection and reconstruction algorithms.
