Centre for Mathematics Münster officially founded

Construction of the research building for the "Centre of Mathematics Münster" is moving ahead; the distinctive façade is currently being installed. Now the new research center has also taken a major organisational step: the CMM was officially founded on Wednesday, 15 April 2026.

37 founding members - professors from four institutes of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Münster - were invited to the constitutive meeting. They unanimously elected the CMM executive board, which will serve a three-year term and consists of the following members: Shirly Geffen, Linus Kramer, Matthias Löwe, Chiranjib Mukherjee, Katrin Tent, Eva Viehmann, Burkhard Wilking, and Caterina Zeppieri. Mario Ohlberger and Thomas Nikolaus have been elected as CMM spokespersons and are also members of the executive board.

The overarching goal of the Centre for Mathematics Münster is the sustainable consolidation of the excellent mathematical subdisciplines present on site. The research centre aims to enhance the international visibility and relevance of mathematics and related sciences in Münster.

Research conducted at the CMM seeks to develop and apply integrative approaches to address fundamental mathematical problems across the boundaries of subdisciplines. The main focus lies on the fields of number and group theory, spaces and operators, as well as mathematical modelling and approximation.

The structural objectives of the CMM include strengthening the networking of mathematical subdisciplines and promoting international scientific exchange in key research areas. A particular focus is on supporting and attracting mathematicians in early career stages, as well as on advancing equal opportunities and diversity in mathematics. 

It is planned that the research building of the CMM will be handed over by BLB NRW in December 2026 and can be occupied in March 2027. An opening conference is scheduled to take place from May 10 to May 14, 2027.
