We welcome Dr Karol Bołbotowski as a new Young Research Fellow at our cluster. He has recently been appointed as an Assistant Professor at the University of Warsaw, Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics. He works in the field of calculus of variations, focusing on the optimal design of mechanical structures. By combining tools from geometric measure theory and convex analysis, he investigates new links between efficient structural forms and optimal Monge-Kantorovich transport. In particular, he is an expert in finding and analysing convex reformulations of classical engineering design problems. In this field, he will collaborate with Benedikt Wirth and his group.

Karol Bołbotowski has been awarded the first Urszula Ledzewicz Prize by the Łódź University of Technology for his PhD dissertation in applied mathematics. In his interdisciplinary thesis, he tackled the long-standing problem of the optimality of 3D vaulted structures, which are ubiquitous in architecture, such as in the designs of Antoni Gaudí. Karol's reformulation into a planar convex problem not only enabled him to prove that the optimal shape concentrates on a single surface, but it also facilitated a computational method that achieves an efficiency unparalleled in the literature.
