Two Mathematics Münster master's students awarded "Wübben Foundation Grant"

55 outstanding students, who are now beginning their final semester, are being supported by the Wübben Foundation. This year’s scholarship holders include two mathematics master’s students from the University of Münster. Congratulations! Each of them will receive a monthly scholarship of 1,000 Euros for one year.
Natalia Sampedro Loro from Madrid (Spain) and Anar Abdullayev from Baku (Azerbaijan) are both second-year master’s students in mathematics at the University of Münster. "The grant offered by the foundation means a lot to me, as it frees me from the financial pressure I have felt throughout the past semester. I hope this will allow me to fully focus on my studies," says Natalia. "Beyond the financial support, the scholarship also represents recognition of my efforts so far, which motivates me to continue pursuing my goals with commitment and curiosity," adds Anar.
The two students focus on different areas of mathematics. Natalia chose to pursue her master’s degree in Münster because of its excellent logic group. "I have always been curious about the foundations of mathematics, and logic is the area that delves most deeply into these questions. I also find very revealing the way of working in model theory, as it focuses on studying the properties of mathematical theories rather than specific models."
Anar’s interests lie in applied and computational mathematics, particularly in partial differential equations and their numerical analysis. "PDEs play a central role in modeling real-world phenomena, and studying them requires both a deep theoretical understanding and advanced computational methods. I am fascinated by how analytical techniques and numerical methods complement each other, and I am motivated to contribute to these fields - especially in applications where mathematical models provide insight into complex real world problems and support their solution."
All students who received the Wübben Foundation Student Grant were nominated by representatives of the Excellence Clusters at their respective universities.
Prof. Dr. Franziska Jahnke, who nominated Natalia, remarks that she "gave an outstanding presentation - completely freely, essentially without using notes - in which she demonstrated a deep understanding of the subject matter." She emphasizes that as a tutor, Natalia's commitment also went far beyond what is usual. "For example, she prepared detailed sample solutions, which she made available to all students."
Prof. Dr. Angela Stevens, who nominated Anar, explains: "He has achieved very good and good grades in all of his end-of-semester examinations and attends - with great success - more lectures than required. He stands out by asking excellent scientific questions, and his mathematical treatment of the weekly exercises goes far beyond what is expected. He is mathematically very independent and self-reliant."
About the Wübben Foundation
The Wübben Foundation for Science, a private funding foundation based in Berlin, aims to strengthen Germany as a centre of science and research by supporting outstanding scholars at various stages of their careers. The Wübben Foundation Student Grant is designed to support young researchers during the crucial final phase of their studies, enabling them to concentrate fully on their academic projects and further develop their interest in the central research questions of their field.
