  • Call for Papers

Language use and its inherent variability are an important part of linguistics and a subject of study in all its branches. Across these branches, however, approaches and objectives differ, and various methods of investigation are employed accordingly. The ExAPP conference series presents an important opportunity to juxtapose, discuss, and relate the multitude of current experimental approaches to language variation.

After highly successful meetings in Groningen (2010), Copenhagen (2013) and Vienna (2016), the fourth installment of ExAPP will take place at the University of Münster in September 2019, inviting international researchers employing experimental methods to study the perception and production of language variation. Topics for presentation extend to all levels of linguistic systems as well as to any aspect of variation with regard to the perception and production of language use.

Conference topics include (but are not limited to) experimental research on:

    • Perception of variation
    • Production of variation
    • Social meaning of linguistic features
    • Language attitudes
    • (Mutual) intelligibility
    • Innovative methodologies

We solicit abstracts for paper and poster presentations alike. Talks are allocated slots of 30 minutes, including 10 minutes for discussion. Posters will be displayed throughout the conference day, and there will be a dedicated poster session. The ideal poster size for our poster presentation is A0.

Abstracts for both kinds of presentations should adhere to a limit of max. 300 words (excluding references) and may be submitted using EasyAbstracts provided by LinguistList at http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/ExAPP2019.

The deadline for abstract submission was January 31st, 2019.

  • Programme & papers

The final conference programme can be downloaded under the following link. On Thursday and Friday there will be three parallel sections. On Saturday there are two parallel sections. The rooms ('Senatssaal', 'Aula', S055 and 'Foyer') as well as the breaks are shown in the programme:

  • Venue & Travel

ExAPP 2019 is organised in the historical city of Münster, the cultural centre of the Westphalia region. Münster can be reached by plane via the Münster-Osnabrück airport, but for many it will be more convenient to fly to one of the major airports in the north west of Germany (e.g., Düsseldorf, Dortmund or Cologne). From there, Münster can easily be reached by train (final destination: Münster Hauptbahnhof) or by car.

If you are travelling to Münster within Germany, you can also purchase the DB event ticket via Münster Marketing. Here you can book your journey directly.

The conference will take place in the 'Schloss' (the former prince-bishop's palace). By clicking on the symbol Conference building ('Schloss') you can call up a map of the event location, which provides information on parking spaces and bus stops. A timetable information for the bus traffic can be called up here.

  • Accomodation

Participants are advised to book accommodation in time as september is Münster's conference month.

A limited number of hotel rooms in the vicinity of the conference building is available via Münster Marketing (Überwasserhof 750m; Martinihof 1,6 km; Hotel Europa 2,8km). Transport within Münster is most convenient by bike (here is an overview of the bicycle rental stations) or by bus (conference participants will receive a bus ticket upon on-site registration). Meanwhile there is also the possibility to explore Münster with e-Scooters. The scooters of the brand "TIER" can be found in many places in the city and you can recognize them by their uniform color. All you need is an app and Paypal or a credit card.

By clicking the following link you get access to the exclusive ExAPP booking web page of Münster Marketing: http://bit.ly/ExAPP2019_Hotels

Attention: If you are interested in a reserved hotel room, you must be quick, as there is only a limited number available. The hotel rooms can be booked until 29.08.2019.

Too late? Not so bad: A variety of other options for accommodation can be found on the regular homepage of Münster Marketing.
