A new research project: Atlas of First Names in Germany

Damaris Nübling and Daniel Kroiß, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany, are starting a new project: an Atlas of First Names in Germany.

Using data from the 1998 telephone directory, they are creating an atlas showing how first names were distributed in Germany in the 20th century (after 1945).

Other topics include:

- migration from Poland, Russia and the Czech Republic (mainly German names);

- the division into two states and political systems;

- migration from Southern Europe, Vietnam and Korea to East Germany;

- migration from Turkey, Spain, Italy and Greece to West Germany.

Further details and topics can be found in the following downloadable presentation (click here to open and save the PDF).

New ideas for collaborations!

Svitlana Nasakina from Odesa State Agrarian University, Ukraine,  proposes new research ideas:

I am currently participating in the ongoing project "The Peculiarities of the Phraseology of English from a Contrastive Perspective," and perhaps similar projects could be organised in the onomastic community (Link here).

For instance, we might consider the following directions:

1) A comparative analysis of male and female first names across different countries, focusing on a specific historical period such as the first half of the 20th century;

2) A study of personal names derived from or associated with animals (e.g., Leo) and their cultural symbolism;

3) An investigation into the use of names of prominent historical figures (e.g., Taras,  Napoleon) in contemporary naming practices across nations;

4) An exploration of the growing trend toward gender-neutral names and their sociolinguistic implications in various cultural contexts.

New project "Given names of Latvia in an international context“ is looking for cooperations!

Laimute Balode, Renāte Siliņa-Piņķe and Ilga Jansone (University of Latvia, Riga, Latvian Language Institute) developed some research ideas for international cooperations.

If you are interested in collaborating, please get in touch with them. Contact details and further information about the project can be found in their research pitch here.
