Award goes to battery researcher from Münster
The chemist Prof. Stefano Passerini from the MEET battery-research centre at Münster University today received the "Electrochemical Society Battery Division Research Award" at the Electrochemical Society Fall Meeting. In presenting Prof. Passerini with the award, the Electrochemical Society (ECS) has recognized his outstanding work in battery research, which has contributed to developing the science and technology of electrochemical energy storage devices. "I feel honoured to be able to accept this prestigious award as a recognition of my research activities," Prof. Passerini said at the presentation in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Prof. Passerini said the prize was an appreciation of his achievements over the past years, particularly in material research at Münster University. "I would like to thank my colleagues at MEET, my former team at the ENEA in Italy and, not least, my mentors, Prof. Scrosati and Prof. Smyrl, who have encouraged and supported all my research work," he added.
Prof. Passerini has been active for more than 20 years in the field of battery research. After receiving his doctorate under Prof. Bruno Scrosati in Rome, he worked at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota, USA, and at the Italian research agency ENEA in Rome. In 2008, Prof. Passerini came to Münster University. There, together with Prof. Martin Winter and Dr. Gerhard Hörpel, he established the MEET battery-research centre. His special area is batteries of the next generation – in particular, lithium-metal systems. Prof. Passerini is involved in many national and European projects in this field and has already patented a number of new material inventions.
The Electrochemical Society has some 8,000 members in more than 70 countries, making it the largest international association of electrochemists and electrochemical engineers. It established the "Electrochemical Society Battery Division Research Award" in 1958 and has presented it once a year since then. The presentation of the award to Prof. Stefano Passerini was made at the Electrochemical Society Fall Meeting, which is taking place from 7 to 12 October in Honolulu, Hawaii.
