Young Professors Programme (YPP)

Goal of the programme

Associate professors (Juniorprofessoren) and junior research group leaders find themselves in a challenging situation. They have achieved early academic success and must likewise assume positions of responsibility for themselves and others quite early in their career. Junior researchers require a wide range of knowledge and skills in order to continue producing outstanding research results as they get involved in teaching, supervising and administrative activities.

The Young Professors Programme (YPP) supports these early-career academics by helping them adjust to various challenges and mastering the current stage of their career.

Target group

The Young Professors Programme is targeted at associate professors with or without tenure track, as well as junior research group leaders.

Our services

The Young Professors Programme (YPP) supports associate professors and junior research group leaders in three different ways. Support and advice within the faculty is of central importance to associate professors. Through peer mentoring, one-to-one mentoring and group mentoring, the programme provides individual solutions from experts for experts. YPP offers courses and workshops divided into five modules which address all areas relevant to early-career academics in research at the University of Münster: career development, working in an academic context, academic management, academic teaching, and life at the WWU. In addition to traditional seminars, the programme organises micro-sessions which allow participants to gain a general overview of new thematic areas in a short time.

Support services within the faculty

The third important pillar of the programme consists of individual support within the faculty and a consultation session. Colleagues provide support and advice on location in the sense of "onboarding", sharing knowledge about the procedures and characteristics of the faculty. This, in turn, helps associate professors successfully integrate at the University of Münster more quickly. Furthermore, feedback from colleagues, especially when shared in consultation sessions, can be especially helpful to associate professors on their career path.

Mentoring is a valuable instrument for academic career development. The mentors are experienced colleagues whose advice and supervision can help you achieve your professional goals. Not only do you stand to benefit from their contacts, but also their experience. In the first phase of the programme, one-to-one mentoring supports early-career academics on their way to lifetime professorships. To learn how to make the most of mentoring, we recommend arranging a personal consultation or attending a workshop on mentoring. Group mentoring is offered on an ongoing basis. We are always happy to consider suggestions regarding internal mentors.

Underlying structure

The Young Professors Programme pools the expertise of various departments of the University. Coordinated by the Department for Personnel Development and the WWU Graduate Centre, YPP offers services provided by the SAFIR application advice office, the Centre for Teaching in Higher Education (ZHL), the Equal Opportunity Office and naturally the Graduate Centre and the Dept. of Personnel Development. All topics are tailored to the needs of YPP participants.
