What are the central concepts and perspectives of sustainable consumption? What concrete progress is there in its implementation?

ZIN –Spokesperson Prof. Doris Fuchs, together with Frederike Boll, contributed a chapter dealing with “Sustainable Consumption” to the second edition of the edited volume “Global Environmental Politics. Concepts, Theories and Case Studies”. Editors Gabriela Kütting and Kyle Herman combine introductions into the most important theories and concepts of environmental policy with a series of case studies of pressing environmental issues. The second edition includes i.a. new case studies on the role of technology, biodiversity and the “politics of conversation”, China’s role and the conservation of endangered species.

In their chapter on “Sustainable Consumption”, Doris Fuchs and Frederike Boll focus on perspectives on and concepts of sustainable consumption. They identify relevant actors and changes in global Sustainable Consumption Governance. The authors not only explain new developments in research on sustainable consumption but also discuss current progress and obstacles in its practical implementation.

At the end of their text, they conclude that progress towards sustainable consumption is not yet satisfactory. But: the growing number and breadth of initiatives that are committed to sustainable consumption, as well as conceptual developments such as the so-called consumption corridors, give reason for hope, because they can give new impetus to scientific and political debates!
