Research

The geological evolution of the Cycladic area (Greece) is studied on the examples of Syros and Kythnos Island. Syros is of special interest because of its well-preserved blueschist to eclogite facies lithologies, while retrograde overprint and deformation is much stronger on Kythnos - allowing us to study and compare the deformation history of the rocks from Eocene burial to subsequent exhumation, as well as late stage tectonics affecting the Cycladic area until the present. Recent research activities concentrate on geology and tectonics along the Teutoburger Wald (NW Germany), as well as the history of mining (coal, iron and building stones) in the region.

Science Communication

Recently, my focus changed to advocating natural sciences (especially geology) to the public. I worked for the Geomuseum Münster (April 2012-September 2012), developing interactive exhibits about geological processes. Since early 2011, I am working for the Naturkunde-Museum Bielefeld, maintaining its geological collection, creating exhibitions and doing geological field trips for laypersons and high school students. Main focus of my writing activity at the moment is the interface between climbing and the climbers' preferred habitat: Rocks.
