The Institute for Geoinformatics is part of the Geosciences department of the faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Muenster (Germany). Three professors (Prof. Dr. C. Kray, Prof. Dr. E. Pebesma and Prof. Dr. A. Schwering), research fellows and office staff are the basic personnel of our institute. In addition, many (under-)graduate assistants are working in several research and development projects. The staff is composed of computer scientists, mathematicians, and researchers from landscape ecology and geography.

The institute is among the few German university departments that offer a program of study in geoinformatics. Moreover, the institute offers courses in geoinformatics, digital cartography and geostatistics for students of landscape ecology, geography and geology and other programs.

As an interdisciplinary institute ifgi cooperates with several institutes of the geosciences department as well as with the department for mathematics and computer science.
