6. John von Neumann Lecture: Prof. Dr. Persi Diaconis (Stanford University): Adding numbers and shuffling cards

Wednesday, 30.04.2014 16:30 im Raum M2

Mathematik und Informatik

Abstract: When numbers are added in the usual way, 'carries' occur. The distribution of carries (how many carries are typical, if we just had a carry how does that affect the next place) leads to Holte's 'Amazing Matrix'. This same matrix appears in the analysis of the usual method of shuffling cards and there the analysis of carries contributes to understanding of shuffling and vice versa. The matrix appears in the analysis of fractals, Foulkes characters and the Veronese embedding of algebraic geometry. I will try to explain all the terms above to non-specialists and indicate why they are connected.
