Signacula byzantina ex aere / Byzantinische Metallstempel


Von der spätantiken bis zur mittelbyzantinischen Zeit (etwa 300 bis 1200) sind zahlreiche Metallstempel erhalten geblieben, welche im Gegensatz zu ihren römischen Vorgängern (signacula) noch nicht einer systematischen wissenschaftlichen Bearbeitung zugeführt wurden. Im Rahmen des Projektes geht es um die systematische Erfassung aller bekannten Metallstempel, die eine griechische Legende tragen. Neben dem Gewinn von zusätzlichem prosopographischen Material, Besitzer von Stempeln geben oft auch ihre Funktion und Titel an, kann man Rückschlüsse auf die byzantinische Handels- und Fiskalorganisation machen. Besonders im 10. und 11. Jahrhundert findet man ihre Spuren auch auf Transportamphoren im Mittel- und Schwarzmeerraum.

Signacula Byzantina ex Aere / Byzantine Metal Stamps

A considerable number of metal stamps from Late Antiquity to the Middle Byzantine period (circa 300–1200) have survived. In contrast to their Roman predecessors (signacula), these objects have not yet been the subject of systematic scholarly investigation. This project aims to compile a comprehensive catalogue of all known metal stamps bearing Greek inscriptions. In addition to contributing valuable prosopographical data—since the owners frequently include their official functions and titles—the material also offers significant insights into the structure of Byzantine commercial and fiscal administration. Particularly in the 10th and 11th centuries, such stamps are attested on transport amphorae found throughout the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions.
