Earlier this week, Dr. Barbara Halberschmidt and Laura van de Loo visited the DOSB (German Olympic Sports Confederation) in Frankfurt. The meeting focused on the compatibility of studies and elite sports. The objectives included highlighting supportive conditions and structures, as well as finding improvements for those that currently hinder dual careers. This group discussion with participants from various fields (among others adh, athletes, representatives from various universities) provided a constructive exchange to further expand the possibilities for dual careers.
At this year's annual conference of the Association for Sports Psychology in Bochum (May 29-31, 2025), a working group on the topic of "Dual Careers" was led by Dr. Barbara Halberschmidt. Rebecca Rienhoff and Michael Wolff from the Essen Competitive Sports Association, Oscar Dawo from Rotenbühl High School in Saarbrücken, and Laura van de Loo from the University of Münster reported on dual careers from different perspectives (school, vocational training, university studies, and elite sports).
On April 28 and 29, the "Studying and Elite Sport" conference took place in Bochum, organized by the German University Sports Association (adh). Laura van de Loo, Dr. Barbara Halberschmidt, and Prof. Dr. Bernd Strauß presented initial findings from the project "Dual Career – Compatibility of Studying and Elite Sport". Numerous representatives from the DOSB (German Olympic Sports Federation), the Olympic training centers, career counselors, university staff, and elite athletes participated in intensive discussions and developed recommendations for action.

The topic of "dual careers" was the focus of the seminar by Laura van de Loo and Dr. Barbara Halberschmidt in the winter semester 24/25. The seminar participants were very close to the top athletes and learned first-hand how studies and top-level sport can be managed in parallel.
The following clips give an impression of the seminar and were created by the participants.
