22. PharMSchool-Symposium

The 22nd PharMSchool Closing Symposium took place on 10 January 2025 and was moderated by Viktoria Benjak and Sabina Freiberg. The welcome address was given by the Dean of Studies of the department of chemistry and pharmay, Professor Dr. Klaus Langer. Dr. Oliver Schwalbe, representing the Westphalia-Lippe Chamber of Pharmacists, Professor Dr. Ulrike Weyland, Vice-Rector for Studies and Teaching at the University of Münster, and Professor Dr. Marcel Bermúdez, representing the German Pharmaceutical Society, also addressed the students and guests with words of welcome. This year, the student welcome was delivered by Ms. Martha Marquardt, who reflected on four years of studying pharmacy.

The first group of the day, ‘Skin diseases’, began with the presentation ‘The big crawl’ and reported on the behaviour of ticks in the absence of potential repellents. They first worked the repellent DEET into nanoparticles and then into various semi-solid dosage forms.
The ‘Diseases of the blood and haematopoietic system’ group then presented extraction methods for the cytostatic drug doxorubicin and its cardiotoxic metabolites. With regard to therapeutic drug monitoring in children, the substances were extracted from plasma and ‘dried plasma spots’.
The first guest lecture by Professor Dr Dagmar Fischer from the Chair of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg took place after the first break and was entitled ‘Of chicken eggs and biofilms: nanoparticles in infections and inflammations’.
This was followed by the student presentation from the ‘Respiratory diseases’ group. They developed transdermal therapeutic systems and implants for H1 antihistamines to avoid the need to take daily tablets. The ‘Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract’ group then gave a presentation on estragole, which is found in fennel fruits, for example. A two-week self-experiment with fennel tea was presented, as well as the subsequent analysis using ‘Volumetric Absorptive Microsampling’.
After the second break, Dr Jürgen Bügler from the Forensic Institute in the Chemistry Department of the Bavarian State Office of Criminal Investigation gave a lecture entitled "Chemical analysis in the investigation of criminal cases".
The ‘Diseases of the cardiovascular system’ group presented their findings on a new 3D printing technique for the production of patient-specific tablets.
The last group, "Diseases of the central nervous system", dealt with the clinical picture of ADHD and presented a pocket card designed to support optimal counselling for patients and their relatives.

The lecture prize went to the ‘Diseases of the cardiovascular system’ group. The poster prize went to the "Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract" group with the title "From fennel to fruit" and the "Diseases of the blood and haematopoietic system" group with the topic "Iron in balanced form - the power of liposomes".
