ZIN members in the news portal Euractiv on "Sustainable living space in a world of limits"

A sustainable consumption of the resource living space? How is that supposed to work? In an opinion piece on the news portal Euractiv, ZIN members and researchers Sylvia Lorek, Doris Fuchs, Pia Mamut and Nils Blossey comment on the topic of minimum and maximum standards in housing.

Not only in terms of food and mobility do we have to consider planetary boundaries, but also in terms of housing. Since the latter is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse emissions, it will be necessary to limit our living space with the aim of thus sufficiently reducing our energy consumption. Expected measures will require sufficient planning and inclusive policy processes to make living spaces as sustainable as possible. To satisfy basic housing needs, we need minimum space standards. These same minimums also respond to other trends in the housing market, such as rising prices with shrinking living space. In order to realize social minima and ecological maxima, a social dialogue, political support and infrastructural measures are needed.
