Prof. Löschel invited to hearing of the Committee for Economics and Energy of the German Bundestag on 28 November 2018

On 28 November 2018, the Committee for Economics and Energy of the German Bundestag invited ZIN-member Prof. Löschel in his function as chairperson of the expert commission “Energy of the Future” that monitors the energy transition process in Germany. Together with Thomas Bareiß, the parliamentary State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Economics, he presented the monitoring report, dealing with the German government’s energy transition and the expert commission’s statement. In particular, Professor Löschel reported on the present status of the energy transition as well as on other topics of the statement published in June 2018, such as the international framework of the energy transition or proposals for a reform of charges, taxes, fees and levies on energy.

The statement of the expert commission “Energy of the Future” monitoring the process was published in June 2018 and comments on the sixth monitoring-report of the Federal Government published in 2016. The monitoring process intends to review the progress in achieving the goals of the Federal Government’s energy concept “for an environmentally friendly, reliable and affordable energy supply” [own translation] that was agreed upon in September 2010. Additionally, the process aids with reviewing the implementation status of the corresponding measures so that additional provisions can be made.
For this purpose, the Federal Government appointed an independent expert commission with four energy scientists in October 2011 and instructed them to assess and comment on the annual monitoring reports and three-yearly progress reports prepared by the ministries. The Commission consists of Prof. Dr. Andreas Löschel (chairperson), Prof. Dr. Georg Erdmann, Prof. Dr. Frithjof Staiß and Dr. Hans-Joachim Ziesing. The statements of the expert commission are published together with the report of the Federal Government. The monitoring reports focus on a fact-based overview of the energy transition, while the progress reports contain a more comprehensive analysis component and, if necessary, propose measures to overcome obstacles to the achievement of the objectives.
