The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is a software distribution that includes a standalone JVM (HotSpot), the Java standard library (Java Class Library), a configuration tool, and a browser plug-in. It is the most common Java environment installed on laptop and desktop form factor PCs. Cell phones that ship with a JVM most likely include a JVM to run applications targeting the Micro Edition of the Java platform. OpenJDK is the official free implementation of Sun Microsystems' Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE) and is the free successor to the Java Development Kit (JDK).
