Research fields
Agrifood governance
In the field of agrifood governance, the team deals with issues of private regulation, innovative policy approaches, and the potential for a sustainable food system. Globalization and market concentration are changing regulatory processes: private actors are increasingly enforcing their own standards and CSR measures. In doing so, they influence not only political decisions but also the behavior of other actors. The research focuses on the sustainability and democratic legitimacy of these developments.
Business (Power)
The focus is on the close intertwining of economic and political power in democracies and the analysis of global financial structures at the local to international level. Forms of structural, especially ideological (discursive) power and their connection to corporate regulation are examined. Empirically, the influence of these power relations is analyzed, for example, in sustainable consumption and in the field of business and human rights. In addition, the effects of financialization on sustainability and food security are examined, as well as fundamental questions of legitimacy, effectiveness, and democracy.
Climate and energy policy
The focus is on interactions between local, national, European, and international climate and energy policy. The chair analyzes both the influence of non-state actors and citizens as well as normative issues such as justice and sustainable consumption. Another focus is on participation, control, and innovation potential in the energy transition, for example in urban areas and in cooperation with partners in the field.
Sustainable consumption
The topic of sustainable consumption addresses the question of how many resources are needed for a good life and where the ecological limits of consumption lie. Concepts such as strong sustainable consumption and consumption corridors are central to this, as is the role of global power and social structures in sustainable lifestyles. In addition, indicators for quality of life and sufficiency-oriented systems are being researched to enable a comprehensive understanding of sustainability and social change.
Participation
The team conducts research on issues of citizen participation in the context of the challenges of socio-ecological transformation. It examines processes of citizen participation, including in the areas of energy transition and bioeconomy, as well as the potential of civic engagement with regard to the creation of sustainable common good. The focus is on how broad citizen participation can succeed in an inclusive dialogue that realizes democratic principles.
Religion and sustainability
The chair's team deals with issues relating to religion and sustainability. How do religious understandings position themselves on the topic of sustainability? How can specific religious understandings contribute to sustainable development in this field? And under what conditions can religion be used as a resource for understanding in European and international climate policy? Religious actors play an important role in sustainability at various political levels by using religious understandings to promote environmental protection and drive sustainable development. Examples such as Pope Francis' encyclical show their influence on international climate policy. Their commitment presents both opportunities and risks and is crucial for understanding global sustainability strategies.
Responsibility and the environment
Responsibility is central to debates on the environment and sustainability and affects private actors, consumers, and states alike. While sustainability is perceived individually and collectively, the understanding and practice of responsibility varies depending on the context. How responsibility is understood and practiced by respective actors has a direct influence on what measures will be taken in the future to make societies more sustainable at all levels. The chair is dedicated to these and related issues in this field of research.

Centre for Interdisciplinary Sustainability Research
Sustainable development is crucial for the future of society and is therefore at the centre of public and academic debate. The transformation required to achieve this permeates and affects all levels, systems and subsystems of society. The ecological and social sustainability of the global economic system, the formulation of sustainable development goals at the United Nations level, and the involvement of various stakeholders are just some of the current issues that science cannot ignore. The members and staff of the ZIN therefore feel called upon to contribute to the public discourse with empirical, normative and transformative research that is analytical, evaluative, integrative and, where appropriate, practical.
The members of ZIN are professors and doctors from thirteen departments at the University of Münster (biology, chemistry and pharmacy, education and social sciences, Protestant theology, geosciences, history/ philosophy, Catholic theology, mathematics and computer science, philology, physics, psychology and sports science, law, economics), who address the topic of sustainability from their respective disciplinary perspectives. Specific areas of focus include
- joint research and publications,
- organising lectures and interdisciplinary seminars, events and presentations,
- promoting and training young scientists, particularly with regard to the interdisciplinary interfaces of sustainability research, and
- advising political, civil society and economic actors at local, national and European level.
- Within the framework of the ULYSSEUS European University project at the University of Münster, the ZIN is responsible for the ‘Socio-ecological Sustainability’ innovation hub.
