Gender Studies at the University of Münster

Gender studies is devoted to researching the significance of gender in a broad range of social, political and cultural areas. This expansive scope makes it a genuinely interdisciplinary field of research which generates significant contributions and food for thought, also with regard to gender equality. Our research endeavours reflect on existing power structures, serve to uncover structural discrimination and thereby support the development and evaluation of possible measures to increase equal opportunity.

Researchers and academics can apply for funding from the University’s own Programme for the Advancement of Women to finance individual projects and programmes and/or expand gender-related research and teaching. More information on individual funding.

At the University of Münster, there are research centres and working groups with a gender-related focus in various subjects and disciplines, e.g.:

Working group on gender research in physics

Centre for theological gender research

Centre for European Gender Studies (ZEUGS)

Working group on cognition & gender

Gender research network for non-professorial academic staff

The IGAR tool (“Integrating Gender Analysis into Research”) of the “Science with and for Society” project "ERA GENDER-NET” helps integrate the gender dimension into research projects and programmes in order to support research funding organisations, applicants and assessors, and thus strengthen the integration of gender in research projects and processes.

The NRW Women’s and Gender Studies Network [de] serves as a platform of exchange for gender researchers throughout the state.

The Gender Studies Society [de] serves to further develop gender studies in German-speaking countries, to promote understanding of the current state of research in gender studies, to encourage inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation in gender studies and anchor gender studies in research and teaching as a distinct field and as part of other academic subjects.
