Strengthening Democracy Together: A Look Back at Our Professional Development Day

The University of Münster marked the International Day of Democracy on 15 September 2026 with a day of events dedicated to exploring how democracy can be strengthened across the university. The active involvement of nearly 200 participants made the day a valuable opportunity for thoughtful discussion, open exchange and shared learning.

We would like to extend our sincere thank you to everyone who participated. By sharing their perspectives and ideas and engaging in the discussions, the participants played a vital role in making the day a success and sent a strong message in support of democracy at our university.

The three events - “Universities in a Democracy: What a Democratic University Culture Means Today”, “Staying Capable of Democratic Participation in a Digitalised World” and “Democracy Fitness”  - explored questions including:

    • How can we, as a university community, help strengthen democracy at our institution?
    • How can we put democratic principles into practice in our day-to-day university life?
    • How can we respond to anti-democratic or discriminatory views?
    • What skills do we need to remain discerning and capable of democratic participation in a digitalised world?

The “Democracy Fitness” workshop was particularly hands-on. With enthusiasm, openness and commitment, participants exercised their “democratic muscles”. Through a range of interactive activities, participants practised active listening, giving constructive feedback, engaging with different perspectives in a non-judgemental way and working together to find solutions.

The strong turnout and active participation demonstrated just how important this topic is to the university community. Universities are not only places of research, teaching and administration; they are also institutions within a democratic society. Through our everyday actions, transparent procedures, opportunities for participation and respectful interactions, we all help shape the democratic culture of our university.

The events also marked the launch of our new professional development series on strengthening democracy. Details of upcoming events will be shared in the Human Resource Development info-mails. Sign up here to stay informed!
