Research Office for Antique Numismatics

The Forschungsstelle Antike Numismatik (transl.: Research Office for Antique Numismatics) the University of Münster, founded in 2009, sees itself as a platform and network of numismatic activities in research and teaching within the university and outside.

Research & Activities
Members of the Research Unit are involved with projects in the Cluster of Excellence "Religion and Politics in Pre-Modern and Modern Cultures". In this context, various workshops with international participation were organized, the results of which have already been published (publications) or are currently being published.
In addition, the Research Office for Antique Numismatics at the University of Münster has developed into a contact point for young scholars in recent years. They meet once a year for lectures and joint exchange at the public "Day of Antique Numismatics", which is organized in cooperation with the Coin Cabinet of the LWL Museum of Art and Culture / Westphalian State Museum and the Verein der Münzfreunde für Westfalen und Nachbargebiete e.V..

Coin Collection of the Archaeological Museum of the University of Münster
The foundation of the coin collection is formed by ancient coins owned by the baroque scholar Apostolo Zeno and the Bremen librarian Theobald Bieder.
The collection currently comprises over 5,500 Greek, Roman and Byzantine coins. A representative cross-section, which provides a vivid overview of the monetary history of antiquity as well as on certain special topics, is on display at the Archaeological Museum of the University of Münster.
Currently, the collection is being digitized and online presentation is being prepared. In order to ensure broad compatibility of the data in international thematic portals and meta search engines, the object documentation based on norm data is carried out in close cooperation with the Coin Cabinet of the National Museums in Berlin.

Teaching
The university coin collection is of particular importance for practice-oriented teaching. Numismatic courses are offered on a regular basis: The handling of originals is practiced and trained here, and students are also familiarized with the source value and methodology of ancient numismatics. The Numismatic Autumn School is offered regularly in the fall. In 2023 already for the seventh time.
