Research group "European and International Governance"

 

 

• Focus

   

  The European and International Governance research group focuses on questions of governance by both state-run as well as non-state actors in the European and the international multi-level system. Moreover, it is specifically designed for those postgraduate students that are being supervised by either Doris Fuchs and/or Oliver Treib.
  Moreover, the group’s starting point is the observation that political decisions are made at the interface of national and international policy contemporaneous with an increasing level of private actor participation.
  As such, it is the aim of the group to fathom the peculiarities and impacts of this delimitated and increasingly “private” form of policy-making.
  In line with this, essential questions include the following: how do international and European conditions affect national politics, and how large is the remaining scope of the nation state in times of both globalization and Europeanization? In addition, which interests, ideologies and strategies, beyond the nation state, are being pursued by national actors in decision-making processes? How large is the influence of private actors on the organization of public politics; on which material and discursive resources is their influence based, and what is the impact of the increasing merger of public and private decision makers on political accountability as well as democratic legitimacy in addition to the material content of public politics?
  The research group as such is not limited in its scope with regards to theoretical and methodological approaches. Nevertheless, and generally speaking, a compelling connection between theory and empiricism is desired.

  The research group is supervised by Prof. Dr. Thomas Dietz, Prof.'in Doris Fuchs, Ph.D., Prof.'in Dr. Antonia Graf, Prof. Dr. Bernd Schlipphak, Prof. Dr. Oliver Treib and Prof.'in Dr. Antje Vetterlein.
