In the latest Leiden Ranking, the University of Münster was the eighth-best university in Germany. A total of 58 German universities were assessed. In a global comparison, it came 325th. For the University of Münster, this figure stands at 11.6 per cent. Within the Natural Sciences and Engineering subject group, 13.3 per cent of publications are among the top ten per cent most cited in their field. Nationally, the University of Münster ranks fourth in this group and 196th internationally. The international Leiden Ranking is published annually by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University in the Netherlands. The ranking is based on bibliometric analyses of the ‘Web of Science’ database from Clarivate Analytics, which are used to assess universities’ publication performance using various indicators at both the institutional and subject group levels. For the current edition, over 1,600 universities worldwide were compared, with the assessment period covering the publication years 2021–2024. From next year, the 'Traditional Edition' will be replaced by the 'Open Edition'. The ranking will then be based exclusively on open data from the OpenAlex bibliographic database, ensuring that all analyses, indicators, and sources are transparent and fully reproducible.
