Shanghai Ranking: top places for Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Communication, Mathematics and Medical Technology

The University of Münster is among the 100 best universities in the world in four subjects. This is the results of the current Shanghai Ranking, a worldwide comparison of universities undertaken by the Shanghai’s Jiaotong University. Mathematics as a subject was placed in the international ranking group 51-75, Chemistry, Communication and Medical Technology made it into ranking group 76-100. The Shanghai Ranking also includes for example Biochemistry and Biotechnology in the Medical Technology group of subjects.

Comparing Münster with other German universities, it shares second place in the field of Mathematics, behind the University of Bonn. Earth Sciences and Chemistry at Münster both came an equal-third, and Communication achieved fifth place, as in the previous year.

The Ranking indicators include, among other things, the number of articles published in prestigious journals, the number of times researchers are cited, the proportion of internationally co-produced articles, and prestigious prizes and awards.

Since 2009, Shanghai’s Jiaotong University has been publishing its Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by subjects from the fields of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Biological Sciences, Medicine and Social Sciences. For the current Ranking, the experts assessed more than 4,000 universities. Universities in the USA took 31 top positions, while Chinese Universities dominated in eleven subjects. The top performer is America’s Harvard University, situated near Boston.
