Employment

Nationals of non-EU-states are subject to constraints in Germany regarding employment opportunities. With a student residence permit, up to 90 days of work (or 180 half-days of work) are generally allowed per year. Exceptions are granted amongst other things if your doctorate is combined with a job at the university, i.e. as a research assistant. Citizens of the European Union as well as of the European Economic Area and Switzerland are usually not subject to constraints regarding employment opportunities. They enjoy free employment movement mobility (Exceptions: Citizens of the new EU-states).

You can find further information regarding the admission to the employment market on the international student council’s (link in German) homepages as well as on the homepage of the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Foundation. In the case of uncertainness or questions, please contact the Department for Immigrant Affairs.
