Welcome

Welcome to our new bachelor student Matthes. We wish you a great start and much success with your thesis!

Laser Tag - group excursion

For this year’s team event, we teamed up for several games of laser tag. Equipped with vests and phasers, we chased each other through corridors, mixed into new teams each round, and discovered quite a few hidden talents in strategy and speed. After the action, we changed the scenery and enjoyed a relaxed dinner together.
We had a great time, and we’re already looking forward to the next event!

IG1 Summer Games 2025

This year, we once again joined the IG1 Summer Games - this time teaming up with Harry Mönig’s group. Across challenges such as “Down Under,” “The Steady Hand,” and the “Wild West,” our team showed strong collaboration and commitment - including the successful milking of a (plastic) cow. Although we did not win the trophy, we enjoyed the event and had a great time together with all IG1 groups.
A big thank you to the organizers for putting together another fun and creative afternoon. We’re already looking forward to next year!

What about spending your school holiday in our lab?

During the autumn holidays, a curious student from the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium joined us in the lab. During this time, she learned the secrets of preparing an ultra-high vacuum system prior to the experiments and participated in our sample preparation procedures. She also gained a good insight into how our measurements are performed with the scanning tunneling microscope. "For me as a student, it was incredibly interesting to witness experiments in a real lab and learn about today's physics research, as opposed to school where we are taught about things that have been known for at least decades, and I'm very grateful to have had this experience," she says.

Inaugural lectures of the Institute of Physics

We had a great time sharing the Inaugural lecture with Jun.-Prof. Iris Niehues and Prof. Hubert Krenner. We are very pleased that so many people from across the department attended our talks and the reception that followed.

City game - group integration event

To celebrate the end of summer, we played the city explorer game just in the city center of Münster. We learned some history and interesting facts about the city, discovered hidden gems of Münster, became artists for a moment, and on Rosenplatz we slowed down to get some rest and listen to a book read by our leader. After an exciting journey through Münster, we had dinner together and chatted as long as the last rays of sunshine would allow us.
We had a great time and completed many tasks from the list, but there is still much to discover!

IG1 Summer Games - Let the games begin!

To celebrate the start of the holidays, we took part in the IG1 Summer Games. Together with Prof. Krenner's group, we established a team that may not have won the games but certainly made itself memorable. We were not afraid of singing or hot wire, and what's more, our egg reached its destination intact!
We had a great time with the other IG1 groups and enjoyed the event very much. Many thanks to the organising team!

Teaching Award 2024 of the Physics Student Council

for Prof. Schlenhoff
© AG Schlenhoff
This year's award from the student council went to Professor Dr. Anika Schlenhoff for the bachelor's lectures "Atomic and Quantum Physics" and "Physics of Condensed Matter". Since there are many excellent lecturers in the department, the decision was not easy again this year. The honored lecturer impressed with outstanding evaluation results in two different bachelor's courses. The students describe Professor Schlenhoff's lectures as easy to follow, with comprehensive enthusiasm for the subjects and a friendly atmosphere in the lecture hall!

Visit of the Christmas Market

Just in time for December 1st, our group took a trip to the Christmas markets in downtown Münster. In very cold but dry weather, we enjoyed hot chocolate, "Feuerzangenbowle" and deep-fried fare and drifted from one Christmas market to the next. That was great fun!
