INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS

Various groups of people are involved in the implementation of internships so that students can successfully take the step into the practical field. Here you will find information on what is important to know and who can help with questions.

Internship-specific information can be found in the tables in the internship-specific tab in the overview

  • Continuous support: subject-specific teaching methodology

Information on support during the internships

Even though they are separate courses in terms of study law, the internships and teaching methodology at the MHS are closely interwoven in terms of content.

As soon as students - usually from the 5th semester onwards - attend teaching methodology lessons, they have often already completed several internships and/or gained various didactic experiences as part of their own teaching. The knowledge of music teaching contexts that they have acquired up to this point - and will acquire in the course of future practical experience - is framed, differentiated and focused on various key areas in teaching methodology lessons.

    Examinations

Your work as a teaching methodology lecturer may include assessing and grading coursework and examinations. Depending on the internship, different practical and written assignments must be completed, both coursework (ungraded) and graded examinations.

In the two internships 3.2 and 4.1, you will assess and evaluate the work together with the student's mentor.

The assessment of the internship report (examination performance in 4.1) should be carried out by you and the mentor within 8 weeks of submission.

The following set of expectations (German)  is available for the assessment of the reflection report to be prepared in year 1.2.

In order to make it easier for examiners to observe and assess lessons using standardized internal MHS criteria, the framework for criteria-based lesson observation and assessment (German)  can be used.

Documentation of assessed coursework and examinations

The information box on the first page of the form tells you who and where to submit the verification form.

    Verification form 1.1 (German)
    Verification form 1.2 (German)
    Verification form 2.1 (German)
    Verification form 2.2 (German)
    Verification form 3.1 (German)
    Verification form 3.2 (German)
    Verification form 4.1 (German)

Important: Once you have entered the assessment, the form should no longer be passed on to the student, but should be forwarded directly by you or the mentor to the internship supervisor (the contact details can be found on the form). The mentor will then enter the credits in the CMS campus management system.

Guidelines for creating and implementing the teaching units

The preparation and implementation of the teaching units by the students is based on internship-specific guidelines provided by the conservatoire

Year 1.2: Guidelines for the preparation of the reflection report (German)
Year 2.2: Guidelines for planning and conducting the teaching sequence (German)
Year 3.1: Guidelines for planning and implementing the teaching unit (German)
Year 3.2: Guidelines for planning and implementing the teaching unit (German)
Year 4.1: Guidelines for planning and carrying out the teaching unit and for preparing the internship report (German)

In addition, the University of Music provides various work aids:

Work aid for lesson observation and reflection (German)

    Questions

Do you have a question that cannot be answered here or would you like to talk to someone? Feel free to contact the internship supervisor or the staff in the study office or study coordination.

  • In the middle of it all: students

Students are at the center of the internships: they are both learners and teachers. On your way to becoming a professional teacher, you will be accompanied and supported by various actors at the conservatoire and at the internship locations; you are primarily responsible for your individual learning progress.

Students generally decide for themselves which internship they would like to complete, when, where and  how. There are various aspects that need to be considered. The parties listed here and the contact persons at the MHS will be happy to support you with your concerns.

    Behavior at the internship location

    The student...

    • adheres to the applicable framework conditions (e.g. when completing coursework and examinations),
    • discusses basic organizational questions about the internship at the internship locations exclusively with the designated contact persons,
    • regularly attends lessons at the agreed time and - depending on the internship - successively takes over parts of the lessons,
    • notifies the mentor and/or the contact person at the music school before the start of the lesson if they are unable to attend,
    • contact the designated contact person at the internship institution or at the University of  Music in the event of structural, content-related or personal questions during the internship,
    • is aware that he/she is a guest at the work placement location and behaves accordingly,
    • is aware that a work placement reflects real everyday working life and that unforeseen events can always occur (cancellation of lessons, room changes, spontaneous illness of students, etc.).

The internship supervisor at the music school is available to answer any questions regarding the internship process.

    Proof of completed hours

Proof of full completion of all internship components is provided by means of verification forms. The information box on the first page of the form tells you who and where to submit the verification form:

    Verification form 1.1 (German)
    Verification form 1.2 (German)
    Verification form 2.1 (German)
    Verification form 2.2 (German)
    Verification form 3.1 (German)
    Verification form 3.2 (German)
    Verification form 4.1 (German)

Students should submit the completed internship-specific verification form to the internship supervisor, who will then record the internship in the CMS campus management system. Verification forms on which assessments for coursework and examinations have been entered must never be submitted to the internship coordinator by students, but always by the examiners themselves.

Guidelines for the creation and implementation of teaching units

The preparation and implementation of the teaching units by the students is based on internship-specific guidelines provided by the University of Music:

Year 1.2: Guidelines for the preparation of the reflection report (German)
Year 2.2: Guidelines for planning and conducting the teaching sequence (German)
Year 3.1: Guidelines for planning and implementing the teaching unit (German)
Year 3.2: Guidelines for planning and implementing the teaching unit (German)
Year 4.1: Guidelines for planning and carrying out the teaching unit and for preparing the internship report (German)

    What does a mentor do?

    A mentor...

    • supervises and advises the student
      • in the preparation and implementation of individual teaching phases during the internship,
      • in finding and developing topics for the teaching units and teaching samples,
      • is also available as a contact person beyond the internship phases if necessary.
    • passes on his/her experience to the student,
    • assesses the student's written and practical performance during the internship (see “Examinations”) and subsequently provides an opportunity for joint reflection,
    • may participate as a member of the relevant examination boards,
    • confirms that the student has completed the internship to the specified extent,

    Questions

Do you have a question that cannot be answered here or would you like to talk to someone? Feel free to contact the internship supervisor or the staff in the study office or study coordination.

  • Everywhere: Internship supervisior

    Information on support during internships

The internship supervisor has two central concerns: it advises the University of Music on the implementation of the internships. It also takes care of the implementation of the internships at the cooperating music school.

    Bringing students and mentors together

As soon as the internship supervisor knows which students would like to do the internship at the cooperating music school, they link the students' wishes to the respective internship and any previous experience with them. The next step is to bring the students together with potential mentors. The students and mentors can then start working together.

    Organizational support and professional exchange

The work of the internship supervisor does not end with the start of the internship; they are still available to mentors and students if required. Questions about the process, content design, certificates, individual internship components and booking are at the right place.

    Contact person for mentors

Would you like to become a mentor but don't know what steps you need to take? Do you have questions about the role of the mentor and would like to exchange ideas? Do you have ideas on how the mentor network could be expanded and/or would you like information on a specific topic? - The internship supervisor is also available to answer these questions at any time.

  • Active in the background: the Study and Teaching team at the MHS

    Information on support during internships

Responsible for the entire study and teaching program at the University of Music, the Study and Teaching Team can be contacted for any concerns relating to internships.

    Study office and study coordination

The registration and remuneration of mentoring activities is processed in the study office. The staff there can provide information on basic questions about expense allowances as well as the processing status of individual procedures.

Questions regarding registration, booking or completion of coursework and examinations can be answered by the staff in the study office and the student coordination office. In addition, the staff in the study and coordination office are available at any time for individual consultations regarding the feasibility and basic implementation of internships.

    Vice Dean for Studies

The Vice Dean for Studies is responsible for the study and teaching programs at University of Music. In close coordination with the people involved, she makes fundamental decisions and is responsible for them. At the same time, she is available for any concerns relating to the study and teaching programs.
