Tamed Passions. Emotional Therapy in Late Medieval and Early Modern Times (12th-17th ct.)
The project explores concepts and traditions of emotional therapy in a diachronic perspective. It tackles the central question of tools and mechanisms against unwanted emotional states, which intellectual traditions these tools and mechanisms are rooted in, and which resources they make use of. Within the period under consideration, notions of emotional therapy varied and changed in many regards. There were, for instance, various modes of reception of classical texts such as Ovid’s Remedia amoris and of the Galenic tradition of humorism. Humanist writers not only creatively responded to classical texts, but also reactivated certain lines of reception (e.g. the Neostoic movement in the late 16th century). Innovative forms of spirituality in the late middle Ages (e.g. the devotio moderna) opened up new perspectives on relations between the emotions and cognitive as well as meditative practices. Lastly, the emergence of different Christian confessions resulted in different ways of thinking about the human soul, its movements, and which forms of texts and prayers can affect them in various regards. The key objective of the project is to provide the field of the 'history of emotions' with a diachronic overview of emotional therapy in the late medieval and early modern period and to develop a differentiated typology of therapeutic approaches considering their intellectual traditions, purposes, and audiences.
Promotionsprojekt: Staatenkunde als Weltbeschreibung. Die Reihenpublikation der niederländischen "Republiken" im 17. Jahrhundert (abgeschlossen)
