Hauke Behrendt is a lecturer (Akademischer Rat a. Z.) at the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Stuttgart. Previously, he was a research assistant at Catrin Misselhorn’s Chair of Philosophy of Science and Technology and worked on several interdisciplinary, externally funded projects on ethical, social and legal issues relating to digital technologies.

His research focuses on applied ethics – in particular the ethics of digitalisation, medical ethics and diversity studies – as well as social and political philosophy. In this area, he works primarily on issues of inclusion and participation, discrimination and social justice. His metaethical interests include theories of normativity, rationality and practical reason. Historically, he focuses on John Rawls, Jürgen Habermas and the tradition of political liberalism.

Behrendt studied philosophy at Humboldt University in Berlin (M.A.) and was awarded one of the two best master’s degrees of his graduation year in 2011. His dissertation Das Ideal einer inklusiven Arbeitswelt (The Ideal of an Inclusive Working Environment, 2018) was graded summa cum laude and nominated for the German Thesis Award of the Körber-Stiftung. His monograph Ethik der Digitalisierung (Ethics of Digitalisation) will be published in 2025 (transcript/UTB). He has also edited several anthologies, most recently Kunst und Moral (Art and Morality, 2022, with Jakob Steinbrenner) and Privatsphäre 4.0 (Privacy 4.0, 2019, with Wulf Loh, Tobias Matzner and Catrin Misselhorn). Together with Joshua Moir, he edited a special issue of the Zeitschrift für Rechtsphilosophie (Journal of Legal Philosophy) on the topic of ‘participatory justice’ in 2024.

He is the spokesperson for the working group “Inclusion in the Context of Legal and Social-Philosophical Analyses” at the Centre for Inclusion Research Berlin. He has also organised international conferences and lecture series on topics such as statistical discrimination and participatory justice. His work has been published in journals such as Moral Philosophy and Politics, Social Theory and Practice, Phenomenology and Mind, the Zeitschrift für Praktische Philosophie, the Deutsche Zeitschrift für Philosophie and the Zeitschrift für Philosophische Forschung.
