Structure categories

For each web presence, the first thing to do is to build up the category tree before content can be entered using HTML documents. For this purpose, first - starting from a main category - a number of subcategories are created, which may contain HTML documents or further subcategories.
The category tree then also provides the rough structure for the navigation. However, care should be taken that the category hierarchy is created as flat as possible to ensure better clarity.

It is necessary to distinguish between the main category of a facility and the subcategories:
Main categories are located in the category tree on the first level. Layout and other parameters are set here and inherited by all subcategories.
Münster University main categories are usually created directly by CIT.
Subcategories are used for content organization, navigation control, and layout customization for individual pages, if necessary.
They are created by the users.

You should create a separate category in the following cases:

  • The subcategory should have its own subnavigation. The start page of the subcategory must also be created in the new category and as a lead page.
  • Since the entries in the right column are controlled by category parameters, you need to create a new category if you want to change the layout of the right column in a certain area.
  • For some pages the layout parameters are to be changed.
  • The rights are to be restricted or extended for this area.
