Online seminar registration for Master students

Please read all information relevant for you.

  • General information

Seminar places are allocated in a two-stage process via the university’s online learning platform Learnweb: In the first stage, seminars are distributed via the fair allocation (“gerechte Vergabe”) tool. In the second stage, they are allocated though the first-come/first-serve (“Abstimmung”) tool.

Please prepare by carefully studying the course catalog. For this purpose, read the seminar descriptions carefully and pay attention to the information on coursework and examinations. The institute of political science can ensure that mandatory courses do not overlap. However, elective courses might overlap and you need to make sure to select elective courses that do not overlap. Also make sure that written examinations do not overlap. Exam dates are usually indicated in the course descriptions.

The system is only used for elective MA courses. Please consult the HISLSF (that is our course catalog) to find out which courses are eligible for you.

Please note that many instructors expect attendance in the first seminar session. If you are unable to attend the first session for good reasons, get in touch with the instructor and inform her/him of your absence.

If you have any questions about course allocation, please contact Robin Elfers at semifpol@uni-muenster.de.

During the allocation process, changes in the course program may occur. It is therefore advised to check the dates and course details regularly before and during the process.

  • First stage: Fair allocation (gerechte Vergabe).

The first stage of the allocation process is carried out via the learnweb tool fair allocation (in learnweb “gerechte Vergabe”). Students can chose one course in the period from 15 February 2024, 12:00 (noon) to  25 February 2024, 23:59 (midnight) and a second course in the period from 26 September 2024, 12:00 (noon) to 07 March 2024, 23:59 (midnight).

If you only need one elective course, you will only participate in one allocation round and need not choose a second course because you will be assigned one of your desired courses after the fair allocation stage.

Upon completing this first round, you should have been assigned ONE or TWO of your desired courses via the tool fair allocation (“gerechte Vergabe”).

    Please proceed as follows:

    1. Search for the Learnweb course Seminarplatzvergabe Institut für Politikwissenschaften.

    2. Sign up for the course with the code seminarifpol. You will now find the course in the section My courses (“Meine Kurse”) on the right-hand side under the tab term-independent (“semesterunabhängig”).

    3. Select the respective allocation procedure among the available master courses.

    4. Click submit evaluation. Here you can place your choices. The first choice corresponds to your highest preference, the second choice corresponds to your second highest preference, and so on.

You do not have to rank every course. Please refer to the description on learnweb for the minimum number required.

Please refer to the HISLSF to find out which courses are eligible for your program and desired module.

The best strategy is to identify the courses you cannot take due to time constraints and to not include them in the ranking. If you are unable to attend more courses than you can exclude, please place those courses at the bottom of your personal ranking.

You can save your ranking by clicking on save changes. You can change your ranking within the allocation period. The time of the evaluation has no influence on the probability of being assigned to a course.

Placements will be finalized on February 26 and March 08. You can see immediately afterwards in learnweb which courses have been assigned to you. You are assured of these places. You do not have to confirm them, you can simply go to the first seminar session.

  • 2nd stage: First Come / First Serve

From 11 March 2024, 12:00 (noon) to 24 March 2024, 11:59 (midnight), a second allocation round will be organized via the a first-come/first-serve procedure and the learnweb tool Abstimmung. This allocation round is intended for all students who wish to take more than one master course. At the end of the process, all students should have received the desired number of seminar seats.

Please register for a maximum of 3 additional courses. Students who abuse the system by registering for significantly more courses will be removed from the allocation system and will not be given a seminar place in the elective program.

You can see for yourself directly in the allocation tool whether you have received your desired seminar seat. No confirmation e-mails will be sent and no waiting lists will be created!

    Please proceed as follows:

    1. Choose in the course Seminarplatzvergabe Institut für Politikwissenschaft the voting you want to participate in.

    2. The course load will be updated live. Fully booked courses will not be selectable.

    3. Mark those free courses you would like to participate in and confirm your selection by clicking the Auswahl bestätigen (“confirm selection”) button. Once you have confirmed your selection, you are registered for the course. No email will be sent to confirm your selection.

    4. You can change your selection at any time during the allocation period.

Please release your seat immediately if you no longer wish to take part in this class, so that this seat is again visible and selectable to other students. There are no waiting lists this semester.

Seminar seats that are still vacant after this round will also be allocated via learnweb.

  • Seminar place allocation for first semester MA students

The separate allocation of seminar places for first semester students takes place at the beginning of the winter semester.
