I will present a construction that interpolates between the free product and the direct product of two infinite groups. In some respects, this construction seems close to the free product (e.g. it has exponential growth and never has Kazhdan's property (T)) but it is also similar to the direct product in other respects (e.g. it preserves amenability and Serre's property (FA)).
