We start with a short history of the positive mass theorem stating that the
total mass of a non-trivial isolated gravitating system must be positive.
Then we indicate how to derive this result from a modern compactification
argument that eliminates the delicate analysis on asymptotically flat ends.
This simplifies the argument to a degree that allows to derive the theorem
in arbitrary dimensions.
