Introduction to the Philosophy of Science

23 - 24 July & 30 - 31 July 2018

Lecturer: Julia F. Göhner

What is science, and what is not science? Are scientific theories true, and if not, why should we adhere to them? Why do we believe that science is reliable, even though many theories of the past have ultimately turned out to be mistaken about the nature and structure of the world? This introductory course was designed to inform participants about the central figures, problems, and positions of modern philosophy of science. Reading about and discussing issues such as the scientific realism debate, scientific explanation, and, briefly, the philosophy of biology, the course provided a comprehensive overview of the discipline. It encouraged the participants to reflect on their own practice and to challenge traditional notions of what science is and should be.

Working with this highly motivated group of young researchers was greatly enjoyable. Their willingness to learn produced lively discussions on even the more abstract and remote issues, and both their contributions to the course and their sensible questions complemented the concept of the course perfectly.

It was an excellent opportunity for someone who doesn't have any knowledge about philosophy to delve into the domain. I found the seminar really enlightening and refreshing.
