Nora Markard new co-director

The legal scholar Prof. Dr. Nora Markard has been the new co-director of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg ‘Legal Unity and Pluralism’ since 1 June 2025. Together with historian Prof. Dr. Ulrike Ludwig, she will be heading the Kolleg, succeeding Prof. Dr. Peter Oestmann, who will continue to be an academic member of the Kolleg.
Nora Markard holds the Chair of Public Law and Human Rights at the University of Münster. With her research focus on international law and comparative constitutional law, she will make the Kolleg, which has so far mainly worked in a historical and comparative manner, even more compatible with contemporary research perspectives. ‘Over the past four years, the Käte Hamburger Kolleg has impressively demonstrated that the tension between legal unity and legal pluralism can be found in all historical periods,’ says Nora Markard. ‘Linking this historical research with debates in current law is an exciting task that I am very much looking forward to.’
You can find a detailed interview with Nora Markard on the EViR blog.
