Decolonizing global sustainabilities - a hybrid world café

This world cafe is organized around WWU’s and USP’s cooperative project ‘GLOSUS –The Global Geographies of Sustainability’. In our hybrid world cafe we discuss together with colleagues form Brazil the importance of local knowledge, everyday practices and nonprofessional forms of living and housing. We aim to bring together our experiences and examples of (un-)sustainabilities from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Munster, Germany. In the very center of our interdisciplinary and international collaboration is the deep concern about the hegemonic global conception of sustainability that dominates architecture and planning today.

In our world cafe we aim to approach this contested relationship between global narratives of sustainably and their implementation at the local scale, the production of local and vernacular knowledge in architecture and planning and the importance of a ‘sense of place’ that entails great potential for more nuanced and localized debates on sustainability.
