Dynamics of Social Plurality

With a view to historical and contemporary societies, the profile area “Dynamics of Social Plurality” focuses on the analysis of causes, mechanisms and effects of the dynamics of social plurality, along with their concomitant processes of interpretation and negotiation. Moreover, it strives to normatively reflect on the formation of plurality, exploring its potentials and effects, and how the various manifestations of plurality and the means of dealing with plurality affect the functionality of various societal forms. The profile area involves researchers from the humanities, social sciences, educational sciences, psychology, economics, mathematics and computer science. The findings obtained in this profile area are directly transferred to socially relevant areas, such as teacher training.

The research focuses in the profile area “Dynamics of Social Plurality” are not only future-oriented; they also possess a high potential for innovation with respect to its approaches. This is reflected in the fact that the participating researchers are involved in top-rate, interdisciplinary joint research projects, e.g. in research units and junior research groups, BMBF-funded projects and the NRW Profile-Building Project 2020 “Cultures of Compromise”. In this respect, the profile area also functions as an incubator for future excellence in research in a thematic complex of the highest social relevance.
