Rules on free attempts, withdrawing from examinations and taking examinations to improve one’s grade

Rules on free attempts, withdrawing from examinations and taking examinations to improve one’s grade have been established for the winter semester 2021/22. These stipulate the following:

  • Examinations which receive a failing grade are considered “not taken”.
  • Students may withdraw from examinations up until they commence. Withdrawal should result in no disadvantages to the student.
  • If the examination regulations of your degree programme allow you to take an examination to improve your grade, please contact the responsible examinations office for more details on the modalities.
  • The rules on free attempts and examinations to improve one’s grade do not apply to theses and cases of attempted deception.
  • For degree programmes that conclude with a state or ecclesiastical examination, the respective faculties may issue deviating provisions.
If the health authorities instruct you to quarantine at home (in accordance with the provisions of §§ 14-17 Coronavirus Testing and Quarantine Regulations of 8 April 2021, most
recently amended on 12 November 2021), even though there is no illness preventing you from taking the examination, you are nonetheless considered “unable to participate” in in-person examinations. The same applies to in-person courses. Please present your quarantine orders when you withdraw from your examination or notify your instructor of your pending absence. If the examination is administered online and participation from home quarantine is possible in the form of an online examination, you may only be considered “unable to participate” if you submit a request to this effect to the responsible examinations office. Please contact the responsible examinations office for more information.
