What does the language course cost?
The language course costs € 500,- per semester.
Additionally, there are University fees (which include the so-called semester ticket) of ca. € 350.
Course participants who pass the DSH exam (German examination for university admission) and start studying at the University of Münster, can have the course fees reimbursed once they have registered for their second semester of study at the University. To do this, open your self-service portal.
What happens if I am ill or miss a class?
If you are ill and miss more than two days of class, you must present a doctor’s certificate. If you miss 42 classes in total (with and without an excuse) or if you miss 20 classes without an excuse (one class = 90 min.), then you lose the right to attend a language course at the Lehrgebiet Deutsch als Fremdsprache (German as a Foreign Language (DaF) department).
What does the DSH exam cost?
There is no exam fee. Taking the DSH exam is free of charge.
What are the requirements for taking part in alanuage course?
You must prove that you have a command of German of at least level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Can I be exempted from the DSH exam?
Under certain conditions, you can be exempted from the DSH exam. If you can prove that you took intensive German classes for at least three years in your last years at school and achieved at least a pass as well as communicative competence or if you have a university degree in German studies, we will check on an individual basis whether you can be exempted from the DSH exam. Please contact us early and request an exemption certificate for your application.
How often can I repeat the DSH?
You can retake the DSH exam once.
Is the DSH exam also accepted by other universities?
The DSH exam in Münster is certified and will be accepted by all universities in Germany.
Can I repeat a language course on the same level?
No, as a rule this is not possible.

We have courses at B1, B2 and C1 level

Do I have to take a language course before I take the DSH exam?
Not if you have demonstrated a very good command of German and are admitted directly to the DSH exam after your online application. Here is the application portal
Will I get a semester ticket if I take a language course?
Students attending language courses are enrolled at the University and have to pay the University semester fees. This gets you the semester ticket
Is there practice material with which I can prepare for the DSH exam?
You can find a practice DSH exam on our website. Upon request, you can get a password to open the pdf files.
Will I get a student visa?
You can apply for a student visa with the letter of admission from the Student Admissions Office.
Am I allowed to work while I am taking the language course?
In the first year of preparatory studies, students are only allowed to work in the holidays.
Will I get a room in a student hall of residence?
If you are taking a German course, you can apply for a room in a hall of residence.
Will I definitely get a place in a language course if I have received a letter of admission?
If you achieve the necessary points in the placement test, you will receive a place in a language course and will be enrolled. If you do not pass the placement test, your letter of admission is no longer valid.
Can I repeat the placement test if I miss my test date due to visa issues?
Students who can document visa problems may start courses up to two weeks late.
What are the times of the language courses?
Course times are Mo–Fr 8.15–13.45 as well as afternoons to 15.30 once or twice a week.
B-level courses have 20-24 hours of classes per week, C-level courses have 26 hours of classes a week.
When do the language courses start?
The language courses start in the middle/at the end of January and August.
How long does the language training take?
This depends on the result of your placement test and how you progress. The C-level courses finish with the DSH exam after one semester. If you start in a B1-level course, the whole language training can take up to three semesters.
When are the holidays?
As a rule, there are two weeks at Easter and one week in the autumn. Also, there are no classes between the semester courses (end of December to mid-/end of January and mid-July to mid/end of August). You can find the current holiday dates here .
What does the placement test look like?
The placement test is an onSET test. It consists of eight texts with 160 gaps in which letters are missing.

How long is a language course?
One course lasts ca. 18 weeks.
Which course materials are used?
We do not work with textbooks but only use our own teaching materials. For the grammar sections, books will be recommended at the beginning of the course.
