Language Learning in Tandem

Learning a foreign language in Tandem means that two people with different native languages meet on a regular basis. The fundamental goal of a tandem partnership is to learn with and from each other in order to refresh and (thereby) improve one's own foreign language competences and skills, which at the same time is the other person's mother tongue. Learning a language through a tandem partnership also has further advanteage, as it allows you, amongst other aspects, to

  • learn individually according to your interests and needs.
  • practise your foreign language skills with a native speaker in authentic conversations.
  • to learn more about the culture of the target language.
  • to learn how to organise your own learning.

Course offer

The tandem courses do not only provide a framework for planning and organising your own learning independently and creatively with the aim to make individual learning successful. They also offer the opportunity to learn together with a tandem partner and earn credit points for your studies.

Below, you can find out more about the different course formats.

Face-to-face tandem courses

In a face-to-face tandem, both partners are on site (in Münster). You plan the weekly tandem meetings together and decide individually on your learning objectives and the meetings' contents. Both the time and location of the tandem meetings can be chosen flexibly and agreed upon by both partners.

The introductory sessions, language learning counselling sessions and workshops take place on-site at the Language Centre.

eTandem courses

Apart from learning with a language partner here in Münster, learning in tandem also works over great distances, e.g. via Zoom or Teams. In our remote tandem courses, the so-called eTandem courses, both partners are based in different places/countries. As in a face-to-face-tandem, you plan the weekly tandem meetings together and decide individually on your learning objectives and the meetings' contents. You have the free choice of location (at home, at the library etc.), you can share additional media (webpages, audio files, written documents, etc.) and use them together, and you have the option of organizing the meetings with or without the video function, etc.

For tandem meetings with partners from Latin America (Argentina and Uruguay), the time difference must always be taken into account.

The introductory session (held jointly with the partner university) takes place via Zoom. The language learning counselling sessions, workshops and the evaluation meeting, as well as the end-of-semester session, take place on-site at the Language Centre alongside the face-to-face tandem course.
