Research Areas

I am interested in the interplay between the various sensomotoric inputs
during navigation and their contribution to the human representation of the
environment. I use Virtual Reality and Redirected Walking to violate the
natural connection between visual and motoric inputs during real walking.
Redirected Walking was developed to overcome the problem of virtual
environments being bigger than the tracked space. Gains are applied to user
movements, so that, for example, a body turn of 90 degrees in the real world
equals a rotation of 120 degrees in the virtual world. Without being noticed
the user can be reoriented and kept within the tracked space. The Virtual
Reality setup comprises a ProView SR80 Head Mounted Display, an InertiaCube 3
and a PPT Tracking System in a 10 x 7 m large room.
