Recent developments for coherent Raman spectroscopy and microscopy

Dr. Petra Groß, Institut für Angewandte Physik, Universität Münster

Different molecules have very specific vibrational frequencies, giving rise to the so-called fingerprint spectral region. This can be exploited for Raman microscopy techniques, which offer intrinsic chemical contrast without the need for sample labeling. In recent years, the demand for label-free microscopy techniques has been steadily growing, especially in the life sciences. Coherent Raman techniques, among which most prominently coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy, have been shown to have high potential as a label-free, chemically specific contrast mechanism. A wide application of CARS has, however, been hampered until today by the requirement of rather complex laser systems. In this talk recent developments for coherent Raman spectroscopy and microscopy will be highlighted, including progress on light source development for coherent Raman techniques, possible applications of CARS microscopy, and improvement of the spectral as well as spatial resolution.
