Studying Dark Energy with Supernovae

Prof. Dr. Marek Kowalski, Uni Bonn

In the year 1998 two independent teams - using Supernovae Type Ia as distance indicators - discovered that the Universie is undergoing a phase of accelerated expansion. This acceleration is generally attributed to the existence of Dark Energy and poses a major challenge to our understanding of fundamental physics. After a general introduction, I will present advances in the current understanding of Dark Energy that result from an analysis of the world supernova data and show new constraints on selected, well motivated physical models for dark energy. In the last part I will give an outlook at what to expect from future surveys.
