Synchronization: Bringing Order To Chaos

Synchronization is probably the oldest nonlinear dynamical phenomenon that was studied with scientific methods, already by Christiaan Hyugens in the 17th century. I will present a general introduction to the subject, illustrated by examples from physics and life sciences. Next, modern developments including synchronization of chaos and by noise will be described. Synchronization in large ensembles can be treated as a nonequilibrium order-disorder transition. Here, due to a spontaneous symmetry breaking, also chimeras can appear.
