Optofluidics for the design of novel miniaturized elements: fluidic lenses, switches and sensors

Optofluidics, the use of fluid optical elements in microfluidic devices, yields novel functionalities for
sensor and actuator devices. A few examples will be discussed in this presentation. The first one is the
creation of fluidic three-dimensional lenses on a sensor chip applied for the analysis of biological cells (onchip cytometer). Such three-dimensional lenses cannot be fabricated with the available chip technologies.
Another example is the fluidic light switch. By changing the refraction index in the microchannel by simply
exchanging the liquid in the channel, a light path can suddenly show transmission instead of reflection. In
the third example it is shown how the concentrations of chemicals in small liquid volumes can be monitored by applying the effect of partial total internal reflection (partial TIR). Finally, the applicability of
optofluidic sensors for microfluidic droplet analysis is explicated.
